Living With and Managing Sickle Cell Disease | St. Louis Children’s Hospital

There are around 100,000 individual’s suffering from Sickle cell disease nationwide and St. Louis Children’s Hospital continues to be at the forefront for the support and management of this condition. With a dedicated Sickle Cell Program team (as a division of pediatric hematology/oncology), our doctors are able to use state of the art techniques and medicines in order to provide the best care possible for our patients.

The Sickle Cell Disease Program includes a team of pediatric hematologists, a pediatric neurologist, a nurse practitioner, nurses, a social worker, and a data manager, who all have the goal of providing unparalleled care to individuals diagnosed with the disease. Currently, St. Louis Children’s Hospital cares for approximately 350 infants, children, and adolescents with sickle cell disease, with a number of new diagnoses each month.

New disease-modifying therapies are allowing our doctors at St. Louis Children’s Hospital to focus on the long term health of our patients. Children are especially able to benefit from these new medicinal techniques, which provide a preventative approach to the complications associated with Sickle Cell Disease. By using medication like Hydroxyurea, our doctors help give patients the ability to live full lives without these troublesome complications.
Children potentially face a lifetime of problems brought on by the effect of sickle cell disease, but St. Louis Children’s Hospital strives to provide the best care possible for these children and build upon the advancements in the field to find the best treatments possible for this disease.
